THE PRACTICAL HEATING GUIDE

A little knowledge.
A more comfortable home.

Look beyond the product photo. These are the details that help you choose.

01 / FIND YOUR FIT

Match the heater
to the room.

Floor area is only part of the picture. Ceiling height, drafts, insulation, windows, and your local climate all affect how a room holds heat.

A portable electric heater can add warmth in an occupied space. Check the manufacturer's room-size guidance and placement instructions, rather than assuming a compact model will heat an entire home.

How to choose a home heater
02

Choose the right heating approach.

Fan-assisted ceramic heaters move warm air; oil-filled radiators release heat more gradually; radiant heaters direct warmth toward people and surfaces. The experience differs even at similar power ratings.

03

Make sense of running costs.

Wattage, operating time, and your electricity rate determine the basic cost. A thermostat can reduce running time once the set temperature is reached.

Check the everyday details.

Think about control placement, fan noise, available floor space, and the safety features listed for the exact model. Confirm the voltage and plug type for your country.

READY FOR COOLER DAYS

A little preparation
goes a long way.

Before the first cold spell, check windows and doors for drafts, keep heating vents clear, and look over any heater you plan to use. Small practical changes can help your home feel more comfortable.

  • Plan which occupied rooms need extra warmth.
  • Check the heater, cord, and plug for damage.
  • Keep curtains, bedding, and furniture clear of heaters.
  • Read the instructions for your exact model.
Prepare for safer heating →
Warmth starts with safe use.

Plug portable electric heaters directly into a suitable wall outlet. Keep them at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from combustible materials, or farther if the manual requires. Switch off before sleeping or leaving the room.

GOOD QUESTIONS. CLEAR ANSWERS.

Before you
choose a heater.

A few things worth understanding before you bring extra warmth home.

Which type of heater is right for my home?

Start with the room, the heating duration, and whether you prefer fan-assisted or radiant warmth. Compare the exact model’s power, controls, safety features, and placement requirements. A portable heater is usually considered for supplemental room heating; whole-home heating needs a broader assessment.

Does a smaller heater always use less electricity?

No. Physical size does not tell you the power draw. Check the wattage on the product label and estimate usage from power and operating time. A lower-wattage model may also deliver less heat or need to run longer.

Are ceramic heaters cheaper to run than oil-filled radiators?

At the same electrical power and operating time, resistance heaters use a similar amount of electricity. Controls, thermostat cycling, heat distribution, and how you use the room affect practical running costs.

Can I use a heater bought for another country?

Only use a model compatible with the local electrical supply and the manufacturer’s instructions. A travel plug adapter does not change voltage or establish that a high-power appliance is suitable for another country.

Can a portable heater stay on while I sleep?

CPSC advises switching portable heaters off before sleeping and when leaving them unattended. A timer or automatic shutoff feature is not a reason to ignore the instructions or safe-use guidance.

How do I access a product offer?
