A Practical Space Heater Safety Checklist

Simple checks for placement, electrical connections, and everyday use before you switch on a portable heater.

Safe heater use starts with the instructions for your exact appliance. General guidance is useful, but it cannot replace the manufacturer's requirements or local electrical rules.

Give the heater room

CPSC advises keeping portable heaters at least 3 feet (0.9 m) away from combustible items such as curtains, bedding, and furniture. Follow a greater clearance if the product manual requires one. Keep air inlets and outlets unobstructed.

Use a stable location appropriate for the model, away from water and busy walkways. Do not assume a heater is suitable for a bathroom or damp area unless its documentation specifically permits that use.

Use a suitable wall outlet

Plug portable electric heaters directly into a suitable wall outlet, not a power strip or extension cord. Check the cord and plug for damage before use. Stop using the appliance if you notice damage, burning smells, or an unusually hot plug or outlet.

Switch off when sleeping or away

CPSC advises switching portable heaters off before sleeping and when leaving them unattended. Features such as a timer, tip-over switch, or overheat shutoff do not replace supervision and correct placement. Keep children and pets away from hot surfaces.

Check the product and model

This checklist concerns portable electric heater use. Fuel-burning appliances have additional ventilation and carbon-monoxide requirements; seek guidance specific to that equipment.

Before the next cold spell

Inspect stored heaters before using them again. Make sure heating vents are clear and smoke alarms are working. If you are uncertain about an outlet or installation, consult a qualified local electrician.
